![]() ARTIST TO WATCH Light and Airy Abstract Painting"Abstract work is not uncommon. What is uncommon is someone who is able, in spite of such a strong history and tradition of abstract work, to create her own language and keep creating abstract work that is fresh, new and beautiful," writes 2018 Artist to Watch Guest Curator Stephanie Walker about Rochester artist Caroline Tavelli-Abar. The artist describes her themes as "freedom, taking flight, sailing, motion, movement, water, emotion and energy." MORE Artists to Watch 2018 is a survey of contemporary Vermont artists that appears as special features in Vermont Art Guide #6 and #7 and in a two-part exhibition at the Vermont Arts Council. ART ON VIEW Look UpGalen Cheney at Edgewater Gallery in Stowe through May 4, 2018. Experimentation and exploration of materials are central to Cheney's work. Her paintings build physically in form–surfaces are built, carved, scraped into. Mixed media layers transform her paintings into a sculptural presence, a mixture of urban contemporary, bursting with energies of forces steeped in nature, and always pushing boundaries. The artist says, "I want my paintings to brim with energy and tension, muscularity, fragility, and heart." MORE |
ART ON VIEW Drawing ThreadsElizabeth Fram at Emile A. Gruppe Gallery in Jericho through May 6, 2018. The artist writes, "Three years ago, in order to revive my drawing skills, I began sketching common household items and table-scapes daily. Concurrently, my textile work became increasingly more reliant on organizing space and manipulating the elements within it through pattern via Shibori-dyeing, color, and intensive fields of surface stitches. It was a natural progression to look for ways to create overlap between these two separate areas of practice, such that they could challenge and complement each other. MORE |

FROM VERMONT ART GUIDE #6 WildlandsIn the early 1800s, when artists of the budding nation sought to distinguish themselves from their European counterparts, they left the city and traveled up the Hudson River to paint romantic scenes of the Catskill, Adirondack, and White Mountains. The generation that followed went deeper into New England, up the Acadian coast, and West. The exhibition "Wildlands" at The Great Hall in Springfield celebrates public lands and national parks. An article about the exhibition appears in Vermont Art Guide #6. MORE |

ART ON VIEW Petroglyphs, Flora & Frenzied EncountersThe Hand-Pulled Prints of Betsey Garand at White River Gallery, April 2-June 15, 2018. Garand's recent prints represent the continuous balance and growth of physical and psychological life. The colors are layered biomorphic and geometric shapes, combining delicate nuances with accents of vibrancy and transparency. Garand uses a combination of techniques: woodcut, monotype, pochôir, spit-bite aquatint, lift-ground aquatint, and à la poupée. The prints create the luscious varieties of form, color, and change inherent in nature. MORE |
ART ON VIEW Where Sky Meets Water Meets MountainsAndria Lovejoy at Davis Studio Gallery in South Burlington through April 1, 2018. Andria Lovejoy's inspiration comes from wherever sky meets water meets mountains. She is "sparked by a California sunset that glimmers on the water; inspired by the sacred mesas and wild landscape of New Mexico; quietly reassured by the long wavelengths that make up sky and ocean of Nantucket; mesmerized by the by the temperamental beauty of Lake Champlain." While her heart travels, home is in Burlington, with her partner, cat, and dog. Vivid colors in both landscape and abstract reflect Lovejoy's visceral response to her surroundings. MORE |
