Entering a Timeless Realm, Vibrant Yet Restrained Palette

"Julia Jensen's vibrant yet restrained palette and the quality of light in her paintings harken to the Skagen and Funen painters of her ancestral Danish homeland. Jensen's oils are gestural, expressive, full of energy and motion," said 2018 Artist to Watch Guest Curator Danny Lichtenfeld. "Her encaustics have literal depth to them, achieved by melting beeswax and resin, scraping, reworking, and remelting." Jensen has said that working with encaustic gives her "the feeling of working outside of time, or of entering a timeless realm." MORE

Curiosities & Activism, Found Natural & Man-made Materials

Barre artist Janet Van Fleet is known for political and environmental installations crafted of found natural and man-made materials. The artist explains, “I am intrigued by manufactured and natural objects that have experienced the effects of time and wear, especially those that have been sculpted by natural forces—water-worn wood, sticks chewed by beavers, and old bits of metal. This kind of natural wear-and-tear is, for me, Nature as Sculptor, and I regard my manipulation of these found objects as a collaboration with these natural forces.” Hardworking and productive, Van Fleet is one of the state’s premier contemporary artists. Artists to Watch 2018 is a survey of contemporary Vermont artists that appears as special features in Vermont Art Guide #6 and #7 and in a two-part exhibition at the Vermont Arts Council.

Dreamcatcher

A large-scale interactive installation that was inspired by the magical ice caves of Kamchatka in Siberia, the sculpted surface on the inside of the sculpture is an echo of ancient times when tribes would gather around warmth during the winter months. Akin to stoking a fire, this communal space features an interactive "hearth" through which visitors, by gently pressing its buttons, can explore luminous color variations. The sculpture’s white interior glows with colorful transformations each time the visitor presses the button. The light envelopes the viewer, creating a warm atmosphere contrasting with the winter exterior of the surrounding mountains of Stowe. MORE

Vintage tools, stacks of produce, farm animals–these are the Vermont staples from which Kossow and Albright draw inspiration. A Parsons-trained graphic designer, Kossow rekindled her love of painting when she received a box of pastels as a birthday gift. Albright serves on the board of the Vermont Pastel Society and teaches pastels. The exhibition "is our way of honoring the spirit of Vermont." MORE

A Mouse in the House

There’s a mouse at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier. A 5-foot tall mouse. He sits on a stack of books on the front lawn. Like most busy libraries, the organization was concerned about delivering services to the 750 people a day who visit. Passing thoughts about the front lawn were often set aside to more immediate demands until a couple from Montpelier decided they wanted to show their appreciation. The story of this sculpture and how public art is changing the library's relationship to art appears in Vermont Art Guide #6. MORE
