CALL TO ARTISTS

Camp Mead

Deadline: Tuesday, May 1, 2018. Camp Mead sits on the banks of the Winooski River overlooking the Middlesex Hydroelectric Dam and just upstream of the confluence with the Mad River. The site was a Civilian Conservation Corps work camp in the 1930s. The present home to Red Hen Bakery and Café, The Mud Pottery Studio and Sculpture Gallery, Nutty Steph’s Chocolates and Granola and The Hive Artist Collective and Gallery, Camp Mead remains a hotbed of creativity to this day. To that end, this summer, they are seeking artists to turn cabins in open studios and muralists to cover the walls with art. MORE

ART ON VIEW

12×12

Robert Manning at the Northeast Kingdom Artisans Guild in St. Johnsbury through June 2, 2018. This well-known Danville artist is inspired by Neolithic stone monuments of Ireland and England, old and new. The works embrace stories from the artist’s life, from a 1935 swim with his family on the Connecticut seashore to the seashore of the island nation of Ireland—and back again, and again. A varied trip down memory lane, Manning sometimes partners Rembrandt with a tennis champion, adding a humorous intimate touch to the intricate drawings and paintings. MORE

FROM THE ARTIST DIRECTORY

Brendan Bush
Burlington

Bush's abstract acrylic paintings explore color and movement and are created as a form of deeply emotional expressionism. With no formal art education or training, experimentation with process and application drive his style. His works explore the fundamental dualities of freedom and imprisonment, of lightness and darkness, of clarity and confusion, of anger and exaltation. MORE

ARTIST TO WATCH

Childhood, Self,
& Aging

Years ago, when Jason Galligan-Baldwin’s mother gave him a box filled with his childhood drawings of astronauts, report cards, and poorly-received term papers, he saw it as a new artistic undertaking. “The series of paintings began because I wanted to use the contents of this box as the background, a starting point from which to go in a new direction,” said the artist. Galligan-Baldwin’s ability to mine his past and explore childhood, self, and aging while making colorful, reflective, and joyous work makes him an artist to watch. MORE

ARTIST TO WATCH

Dialogue & Contemplation

Large-scale work in steel shows Chris Curtis' ability to create dynamic, expressive shapes which continue themes of contemplation and dialogue that extend throughout his body of sculptural work. In April 2018, the Tulsa Botanical Garden in Oklahoma opened a solo exhibition of his work. Curtis is a living Vermont treasure and that is why he is on our list of Artists to Watch. MORE

Artists to Watch 2018 is a survey of contemporary Vermont artists that appears as special features in Vermont Art Guide #6 and #7 and in a two-part exhibition at the Vermont Arts Council.
