![]() ART ON VIEW Artists to Watch 2018, Part IIAt Vermont Arts Council's Spotlight Gallery in Montpelier, May 4-June 29, 2018. The Vermont Arts Council, in partnership with Kasini House, presents "Artists to Watch 2018," a survey of contemporary Vermont art in two exhibitions and in print. Curator Ric Kasini Kadour, editor and publisher of Vermont Art Guide, worked with six art professionals to identify artists they believe are on the verge of doing great things. "We thought it would be interesting to canvass a selection of guest curators and ask them, 'What artists are on your radar?' The resulting survey of noteworthy artists is by no means complete, but demonstrates the diversity of practice and approach in the state," said Kadour. Part I of this exhibition took place in March and April 2018. Opening Reception for Part II and a Vermont Art Guide Meet & Greet: Friday, May 4, 4:30-6PM. MORE |

ARTIST TO WATCH Meditative Geometric Abstraction & Color"I am fascinated by animism, the belief that natural objects have souls, and for me it carries into objects people use and then discard," said Sherri Rigby. More recently, Rigby has been cutting up her paintings and weaving them back together. 2018 Artist to Watch Guest Curator Stephanie Walker calls this new work "a completely fresh and personal take on geometric abstraction that takes it entirely out of the traditionally male-dominated sphere using the traditionally female technique of weaving. Brilliant. Beautiful and it has staying power." MORE |
ARTIST TO WATCH A Thousand Remembered MomentsSoft sculpture figures pose, dance, and climb the walls. An image of Donald Trump performing "I'm a little teapot" is embroidered on a series of cotton swatches. Collaged bird people in skirts and sweaters perch in a leafless tree. The world of Hannah Morris is a rich narrative informed by her belief that "vision is shaped by thousands of remembered moments." Hannah Morris is one of those artists you come across and think, why have I not been watching this artist all along? MORE |
ART ON VIEW Ronald Slayton: Master of Watercolor At T.W. Wood Gallery in Montpelier, May 1-June 29, 2018. Ronald Slayton (1910-1992) was born in Barre. During the Great Depression, he worked as an artist in the Vermont Division of the federally-funded Works Progress Administration (WPA) from 1936-1939. W.C. Lipke once commented that Slayton "has been a painter, poet, dramatist, educator, politician, gallery director, peace activist, humorist, critic and historian suggest[ing] that the single appellation ‘artist' is not broad enough to encompass his many achievements." The exhibit highlights two watercolor murals, The Last Supper (1985) and The Hunger Dream (1985). Figures in The Hunger Dream juxtapose the satiated and the hungry in a series of ten panels: the whole artistic venture becomes more than the sum of its separate parts. Slayton's almost naïve, simple, boldly stated images directly confront the viewer today as much as in the past. They contradict our tendency to treat the facts of hunger as abstract issues of logistics and statistics. "Some of this beautiful and moving artwork has not been exhibited in many years and the Gallery is thrilled to be showing it," said Ginny Callan, the Gallery's Executive Director. Opening reception during Montpelier's Art Walk, Friday, May 4, 5-8PM with an Art Talk at 6PM featuring Bobby Gosh, Tom Slayton and Philip Robertson. MORE |

ART ON VIEW Spirit of PlaceAt GreenTARA Space in North Hero, through June 3, 2018. Opening reception: Saturday, May 5, 3-5PM with kite flying, weather permitting. GreenTARA Space's first show of 2018 is about the feeling we find when we are grounded in place, in knowledge of where we are, yet connected to the energetic space around us, the sky, the lake, and the beauty of being. The show presents a combination of playful and thoughtful work that is both grounded in the dynamic spirit and color of "Flying Kites" from Kate Pond, which hang throughout the volume of the gallery and Nori Pepe's work, "Carving out a Place", black-and-white unframed linocuts based on her travels.
